Neftalí Rivera is a Puerto Rican-born singer, guitarist, and songwriter who has made a significant impact as a performer and cultural ambassador of Puerto Rican traditional music in the Pacific Northwest, specifically in Portland, Oregon.
Origins & Musical Roots
Born in rural Morovis, Puerto Rico, Rivera began playing the guitar at the age of eight, when his father taught him basic chords and songs. By the age of 17, he had launched his career as a professional musician in Puerto Rico.
Emigration & Artistic Journey
In the early 1990s, Rivera relocated to Oregon with his family and quickly became embedded in the Portland music scene, notably through associations with the Oregon Folklife Program.
Grupo Borikuas
In 1996, approximately five years after his move, Rivera founded Grupo Borikuas, a Latin band dedicated to celebrating and sharing the ethnic and folkloric music of Puerto Rico, as well as Afro–Caribbean traditions.
The group consists of musicians deeply rooted in Puerto Rican heritage, including Ramón Cancel (cuatro and lead guitar), Aquiles Montas and Martín Velez (percussion and vocals), and percussionist Victor Pizarro.
Repertoire & Style
Rivera specializes in several traditional Puerto Rican genres:
Danzas – Romantic or festive instrumental ballroom pieces somewhat akin to the waltz.
Aguinaldos – Traditional Christmas folk songs performed by parranderos (carolers) during the holiday season.
Bomba & Plena – Afro-Puerto Rican genres rooted in expressive rhythms and storytelling:
Bomba engages a dynamic dialogue between dancer, drummer, and singer.
Plena serves as a musical “newspaper,” documenting daily life and events through percussive chant.
Performances & Cultural Outreach
Grupo Borikuas first gained local recognition in Portland by performing in Pioneer Square and participating in the Oregon Music in the Park series. Since then, they have performed regularly at events such as the Celebration of National Hispanic Heritage, the Latino Cultural Festival, Salsa en la Calle, and others. They’ve also played for over a decade at Andina Restaurant in Portland.
Educational & Cultural Role
Rivera has also contributed as an educator, explaining musical traditions such as plena and bomba, their history, instruments, and cultural significance.
Self-Description & Local Presence
On social platforms, he identifies as a “cantante, compositor y músico Boricua, de Morovis, P.R. ahora vivo en OR USA.” He is known locally for weekly performances—solo on Thursdays and as a duo on Fridays.
Patrons at his performances describe him as “kind, tolerant, always good humored and unfailingly polite and charming with everyone at our restaurant.”
